Her mother agreed to this because she sees her daughter as wasting away her youthful years and decides that a marriage to one of the Blackthorne sons will be good to uplift their family. John Blackthorne falls in love with Evangeline on first sight, and when it seems to be mutual, he feels like he has won already. But his brother Jack also lusts after Eva and wants to have her all to himself even though his feelings aren't as pure as that of his brother. He is cunning enough to gain the favour of her mother, and he promises her all the expensive things if she can convince her daughter to choose him.
